The Client

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority is a UK government research organisation responsible for the development of fusion energy. It is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

The authority focuses on United Kingdom and European fusion energy research programmes at Culham in Oxfordshire, including the world’s most powerful operating fusion device, the Joint European Torus (JET). The research aims to develop fusion power as a commercially viable, environmentally responsible energy source for the future.

“You and your team have done an awesome job under difficult circumstances; UKAEA could not ask or expect more than you have given to complete this project. This should make you and your team very proud; it shows the power of investment in conjunction with contractors who take a real pride in the deliverable. Very well done.”

The works

The full scope of works includes replacement of Flat Roof coverings, Rooflight replacement and associated works delivering an IKO roofing system.

We have established full understanding, awareness and appreciation of the Centre and the significant research being conducted at the facility on behalf of the UK Government; we continue to be accommodating and sensitive to the needs of building users, communicating daily with UKAEA to adjust our programme as necessary and ensure our works do not disrupt the day-to-day operations within the live/operational environment.
We ensured early and proactive investigative surveys to identify existing plant and services at roof level to understand the restrictions with regards to Safe2Torch areas and ensure all necessary permits are in place (Hot Works) and safe systems developed for all areas.
